The Time for Lunch campaign was mentioned on Iowa Public Radio yesterday during a conversation with U.S. Congressman Leonard Boswell (D-IA, 3rd Congressional district). You can listen to the entire program online. Kurt Friese calls in to discuss children's health and school lunches about a third of the way into the program. A major goal of the Time for Lunch Campaign is to make our representatives in Congress aware of our position on the Child Nutrition Act. Our children, and all of America's children, need real food in school. You can find contact information for your federal and state legislators here. Slow Food USA offers some tips on how to connect with your elected officials. Here are some quick ideas: Quick steps: - Write a letter to your legislators. There is a helpful list of key talking points here.
- Make a phone call to tell them that change can’t wait: It’s time provide America’s children with real food at school.
- Invite your legislators to your Eat-In and/or setup a meeting to talk in person.
- Tell us how it went.
Remember-- your politicians work for you! |

This year, we have an opportunity we cannot pass up. In the fall, Congress will decide whether to update the Child Nutrition Act, which is the law that determines what 30 million children eat at school every day. By giving schools the resources to serve real food, we can build a strong foundation for our children’s health. We can teach them healthy habits that will last them through life. We can make a down payment on health care reform. We can do all of this, but only if we help our legislators connect the dots.
Slow Food Iowa City is hosting a Labor Day Potluck in the Park, one of over 200 around the country, to kick off the "Time for Lunch" campaign & to call on Congress to make REAL FOOD the standard in public schools. Price: Bring a (local & sustainable!) dish to share, & a beverage if you like Date: Monday, September 7, 2009 Time: 11:00am - 3:00pm Location: Lower City Park, Shelter #12 Sign the petition here: http://www.slowfoodusa.org/index.php/campaign/time_for_lunch/ |
